Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak
In this unit, the students will participate in a variety of drama activities based upon the picture book, “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak. The unit will also include some visual arts activities to support and build upon the drama experiences. The students will move like a ‘wild thing’ and create mirror images of ‘wild things’ from the storybook. The students will become Max and create a new spell to tame the ‘wild things’ as well as deciding upon rules to govern the land Where the Wild Things Are. The students will also become a wild thing and attend the ‘rumpus’. They will become expert reporters and hot seat Max. They will retell some of his adventures and imagine an adventure of their own. The students will illustrate a wild thing, make a crown and paint a picture of an imaginary place.
