What are the Olympic Games?

In this unit, the students will explore aspects of the Olympic Games. They will locate London on a world map and investigate a calendar to find out when the games will be held. The students will create a simple invitation, inviting someone to attend the Olympic Games. They will become familiar with the names of some countries that participate in the Olympic games. They will illustrate an athlete from a competing country and create a class big book of athletes. The students will name some well-known Australian athletes and match these athletes to their sports. They will also create a good luck email to send to their chosen athlete. In the final learning sequence, the students will become familiar with the different sporting events that take place during the Olympic Games. They will match the equipment needed for some of the sporting events. They will write simple “Who Am I?” descriptions of athletes and a simple recount of an Olympic games event. The students will contribute to a class graph of favourite sporting events and discuss the information gathered from the graph. They will participate in some running races and identify how their bodies feel before, during and after exercise. Finally, the students will imagine that they are present at an Olympic Games event. They will illustrate what they imagined and create a ‘Photo Gallery”.
