In this unit, the students will listen and respond to fairy tales such as Cinderella, Snow White, Rumplestiltskin and The Frog Prince. The unit is introduced using “The Jolly Postman and Other People’s Letters” by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. The students will complete reading tasks such as a character report card, text reconstructions, story map and invitation to Prince Charming’s ball. The students will explore the structure of recounts, narratives, and descriptions. They will contribute to the joint construction of these texts and will also write a cinquain about a character from Snow White. In the talking and listening component of the unit the students will have a discussion about a fairy tale, and will identify their favourite fairy tale character and justify their choice. They will also hot seat Cinderella and play a game of “Which fairy tale character am I?”
