Speak to usIn this unit, the students will listen and respond to stories about pets. These stories are “Dear Zoo” by Rod Campbell, “My Cat Maisie” by Pamela Allen, “John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat” by Jenny Wagner, “Harry, The Dirty Dog” by Gene Zion and “Arthur” by Amanda Graham. They will use these stories as springboards for their reading, writing and talking and listening tasks. In Reading, the students will complete activities such as word matching, a text innovation, a cloze passage, sequencing events in a picture book and matching speech bubbles to illustrations. In Writing, the students will write a description of a pet. They will also jointly construct a retelling of a story and a review for a picture book. The students will write a simple procedure for washing a dog. In Talking and Listening, the students will participate in activities in which they have to use descriptive language. They will hot seat a character from a picture book. They will also listen to a guest speaker and give a simple oral procedure on how to care for a pet.
