This unit of work is based on “Nim’s Island” by Wendy Orr. The students will have the book read to them during shared reading. The tasks in all content strands will relate to the text. The students will jointly construct and then independently construct an information report, exposition and narrative. They will create a tour guide of Nim’s Island in the form of a PowerPoint presentation or brochure. The reading tasks are aimed at developing the students’ reading skills, and deepening their understanding of the text, by examining specific events, settings and characters. They will explore descriptions of the setting, create character profiles, make a raft, and compare the text with the movie. The students will engage in a range of talking and listening tasks. These will include hot seat activities, discussions and the presentation of their tour guide.
