In this unit, the students will explore aspects of rural Australia. They will become familiar with the location of rural communities and the geographical, social and environmental features of rural communities. The students will choose a rural community and write a report about this community. They will listen to a guest speaker discuss aspects of rural living and they will write to students in a rural community. They will create a fictional rural community and become a resident of that community. The students will then complete activities, in role as a rural Australian. The students will investigate how rural Australia contributes to the economy through the production of resources. They will complete a flow chart and give an oral explanation on the production process of a specific resource. The students will also research a significant rural Australian and write a biography for this person. They will paint a portrait and the class will create a “Rural Australians Hall of Fame”. Finally, the students will investigate issues threatening rural communities and will write a letter to a politician.
