How and Why Do People Celebrate?

In this unit, the students will investigate celebrations. The students will identify different types of celebrations and will categorise them. They will create a class calendar showing when different celebrations occur and will write a recount about a special day or event that they have celebrated. The students will then investigate the events that we celebrate with our family and friends and after interviewing different people will create a graph of these on the wall. Birthdays will be focused upon as a common celebration and the students will investigate food, music, symbols, customs, gifts etc associated with this celebration, and will then dramatise opening presents received at this celebration. The students will then investigate a celebration of their choice. They will obtain information through an interview and other sources and will write an information report. The students will then focus on special days that we celebrate as a nation. They will create a simple Anzac day ceremony and will investigate how Australia day is celebrated in the local community and create an advertisement for it.  The students will then investigate different events celebrated around the world such as Chinese New Year, Diwali, Halloween and Hanukkah. They will focus on Christmas as an international celebration and investigate how this is celebrated differently around the world. Finally the students will be involved in planning, preparing and celebrating a special day or event of their choice.
