Speak to usIn this unit, the students will explore the text, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” by J. K. Rowling. In the Reading component of the unit, the students will explore the ways in which the author has created characters and the setting. They will read descriptive passages and respond to these through illustrations and model making. The students will also complete a comprehension passage and prepare a Reader’s theatre. In Writing the students will jointly construct and then independently construct a letter, an advertisement, a set of instructions on how to play Quidditch and a narrative. In Talking and Listening, they will work together in groups to create a news report and give an oral recitation of the Hogwart’s School Song. They will hot seat Harry and give an oral commentary of a Quidditch match. The students may also watch the movie and discuss or alternatively, conduct a mock interview with the author.
