Get Ready For Christmas

In this mini unit, the students will listen and respond to the stories “Harvey Slumfenburger’s Christmas Present” by John Burningham, and “The Little Reindeer” by Michael Foreman. They will complete reading tasks such as an innovation on the text, text reconstructions and a story map. The students will explore the structure of recounts and procedures. They will contribute to the joint construction of these texts and will also write their own recount of Santa’s journey home from Harvey’s place as well as a recipe for a treat for the reindeer in “The Little Reindeer”. In the talking and listening component of the unit the students will describe the present Santa left for Harvey and recount the events leading up to opening presents at Christmas at their house. They will also hot seat the boy in “The Little Reindeer”, and create a recipe from an oral procedure.
