Explorers Of the Great South Land
In this unit, the students will investigate sea explorers of “The Great South Land”. They will identify the main sea explorers who contributed to the discovery of Australia. They will jointly construct a timeline of sea exploration and will complete a research assignment on an explorer of their own choice. The students will create a “Portrait Gallery” of Captain James Cook and will complete a short biographical profile. The students will then research the voyages made by Captain Cook, and will share the information about one of his voyages with the rest of the class. The students will read entries from Captain Cook’s journals and they will work in a small group to present one of these journal entries in the form of a brief drama.
