Convict Australia
In this unit, the students will investigate some aspects of Australia’s convict history. They will find out where the convicts originated and they will locate these places on a map. The students will listen to a passage explaining some of the reasons why convicts were sent to Australia. They will then create a timeline to show the events leading up to transportation. The students will form groups to research one of the ships of the First Fleet. They will participate in an excursion to “The Rocks” or “Old Sydney Town” (or alternatively watch a relevant video). They will then research aspects of convict life in Australia. The students will also become familiar with some of the ways in which convicts were emancipated.
