In this unit of work, the students will explore the ways in which meanings are communicated through signs and symbols. The students will draw a sign or symbol that they know and will suggest what it means. They will walk around the local neighbourhood and will identify and record signs and symbols that they see, and will then categorise these signs and symbols according to their purpose. The students will complete a retrieval chart describing the purpose, meaning and intended audience for different signs and symbols. They will examine some of the ways that meanings are created through signs and symbols. They will work in groups to design a sign warning that a beach is polluted, but will convey this meaning in different ways such as words, pictures or symbols. They will then examine the signs and discuss which was the most effective. Finally the students will work in small groups to design and make a model of a playground using signs to indicate different areas.
