Advertising and the Meaning of Christmas

This unit is based on advertising and the meaning of Christmas. The students will create an oral recount of the events of the nativity story and discuss what they believe to be the true meaning of Christmas. They will then interview others to explore their beliefs about this issue. The students will examine the pros and cons of advertising at Christmas. They will examine how advertisements target particular audiences and will write an exposition arguing how an advertisement succeeds in advertising a product to a given market. The students will then investigate common strategies used in advertising and will compare two ads for the same product to examine how effective the strategies used were. The students will then create an ad for a popular Christmas toy and will examine different advertisements to see if they reflect the true meaning of Christmas. Finally the students will debate the topic: “Christmas has become too commercial” or “The true meaning of Christmas has been lost”.
