This unit is based on the book “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. The students will have the book read to them during shared reading. They will also view the DVD version of the story. The tasks in all content strands will relate to the text. The reading tasks are aimed at developing the students’ reading skills, and deepening their understanding of the text, by examining specific events, characters and settings. The students will write an exposition based on the topic “Christmas is a time for giving”, and will also write a short story based on the main message from “A Christmas Carol”. The students will engage in talking and listening tasks, which will develop their listening skills and their understanding of oral reports. They will listen to guest speakers from local charitable organisations and report upon their role at Christmas. The students will also participate in a hot seat activity.
